If you’re still stuck in the world of dial-up Internet access, it’s way past time for you to join the wireless world. Here are the steps you need to take.

1) First, contact a local ISP (internet service provider) who offers either ADSL or cable Internet.

2) Since step 1 will probably take a few days at least, use this time to visit a local store and browse in the computer section for a wireless router. If you don’t know what they look like, ask a clerk to show you the wireless routers.

You can find them at department stores, computer parts shops, electronics stores, and even online. Before you buy, remember to find a router with a strong enough signal. Ideally 108 mbps or higher. Make sure that it says it’s G compatible which is currently the industry standard, and will ensure your computers will all be able to connect properly.

3) Once you have your cable or ADSL access setup follow the instructions that came with the router in determining which wire plugs from your computer into which hole on the back of the router. You then need to use an Ethernet cable to connect the router to the cable or ADSL modem.

4) Now open Internet Explorer and type in your router’s IP address (This should be found in the manual).

5) Find the user name and password, which are provided in the router manual. Use these to log into your router when the “connection wizard” appears on your screen. After a short installation process, through which your computer will guide you, your wireless connection should be ready to go.

6) Alternatively, your router may come with a setup disc, that will help you to setup the wireless router properly.
