Amazon.co.uk Review In a nutshell: One of the most respected Western role-playing games of all time is back with huge improvements in graphics and accessibility, including a completely real-time combat system and the largest, most detailed game world ever seen. Phew. The lowdown: Although previous Elder Scrolls games have enjoyed something of a like it or loathe it reputation, this latest sequel has the means to appeal to everyone thanks to one simple improvement: its incredible new graphics. Unlike many role-playing games it is viewed from a first person perspective, with a game world portrayed in a staggering amount of detail, and realistic psychics and characters that genuinely seem to be going on about their own separate lives. The game's real appeal though lies in the huge freedom: play it exactly how you want. Most exciting moment: Using the new combat engine to fight off dozens of enemies, then stealing one of their mounts and riding off into the sunset. Since you ask: Emperor Uriel Septim VII is voiced by Star Trek and X-Men luminary Patrick Stewart, but all the characters in the game have full spoken voiceovers instead of just onscreen text. This is the next generation, you know. The bottom line: One of the most realistic and accessible role-playing games ever made. Harrison Dent

Don't see what the fuss is about. August 28, 2010 S. Stephenson I'll admit that I'm only about 10 hours in, but unfortunately I just can't bring myself to be that interested in this game. Yes, the world is huge... but depressingly generic and unoriginal. There are many different towns to explore but they all feel much the same. The character skill tree and class creation system is excellent and very versatile... however the combat itself is dull and repetitive.
The graphics (which seems to be what most people rave about) are brilliant... as long as you're standing still. Abrupt, pop-up animations constantly break the immersion, and as you run through areas the frame-rate drops and the whole game stutters. The draw-distance for enemies and other npcs is absolutely terrible- things simply disappear once you get a few metres away from them. There's really no excuse for these sorts of issues on a console game.
In addition, your character's ability to interact with other npcs is very limited making me wonder where the actual role-playing element comes in. Sure, you can abide by the law or you can be a thief - you can go around killing people or you can choose to be nice - but that's all standard sandbox stuff, not RPG. You wouldn't call GTA IV a role-playing game despite the fact that you have the freedom to go where you please and be naughty or nice. Ultimately there are no real ways to express your character to the npcs that populate the world, as dialogue choices are incredibly sparse. Your ability to influence people with your character is limited to this stupid little mini-game in which you have to 'crack' an npc's opinion of you almost as if you were picking a lock. Personally I prefer actual dialogue options like in Fallout 3 or DragonAge.
Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe I just need to keep at it to understand what all the fuss about, but ultimately I think if a game hasn't hooked you after 10 hours then it probably won't at all so for me Oblivion is decidedly average.
Oblivion Laggyness January 22, 2010 E. Flood (London, UK) I don't know if this has been covered already, but I had a problem when first playing Oblivion on my Xbox 360. There seemed to be constant freezing when moving anywhere in the world. Kind of like lag online. It made the game unplayable because it took so long to get anywhere. I was fuming! I spoke to a mate who recommended holding X on the Bethesda loading screen when the game first fires up. Apparently this empties the cache?? I have no idea what that means but it worked!
I now play Oblivion for hours at a time, skipping merrily through the meadows in my glass armour swinging my elven sword in to demonic faces then stopping by an Inn and getting leathered. It's a definite classic.
1 Word: Amazing October 27, 2009 G. Gray (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Simply amazing. My friend came round and brought this with him.
"Ok lets give it a go" I thought.
He didn't get a single second of it. It is SO gripping. It is GREAT.
I can't do a full-scale review. I can't describe it.
Like I said. 1 word:
Amazing.
the restrictive linear gameplay hampers it, but the fantastic characters propell it further October 15, 2009 D. MacMillaine (Cambridge, England) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
im sure every1 has played the "elder scrolls I've oblivion |*|" by now. i mean, who hasn't played this game!! well if you havent, be sure to read this immedietly.
ill start of with my grypes with the game as they come swiftly. firstly is the very small map. if u thout fallout 3 was small, just wait until you see this tidger! it just goes to show that fifa 09 is still the no1 choice for when it comes to sheer map size and exploraetion. also a thing that goes hand in hand with this is the gameplay. wow how unoriginal can u get! once again i call back fifa 07, truly the biggest innovator in the gaming industry stilll!!!!!! walking around atmospheric dungeons, dreading every turn may be your last whilst searching for equipment and secrets whilst keeping your health and magick up has never been so inadequate!
now that that is out of the way lets move on to the best part!! the CHARACTERS! you play as a deformed potato called "Name your character". he is in jail and then patrick stewart busts you out and is like "come with me dude we're bustin you out of this joint" and you're like "yeah dude MAKE IT SO!!!" lol so anyway patrick dies and then you must avenge his dead body. well that was more of a synopsis but still you get the idea. killing off the a-list actor within 10 minutes is something every game should do. they also gave "name your character" so much personality i considered doing a character study of him in one of my classes. its that good!
overall oblivion is an excellent game, however its limited playtime (only about 20 minutes) may turn off a lot of people which is a shame because everyone deserves to know about "name your character"'s tragic tale and his quest to save liberty city from the evil ShinRa corporation.
Absolutley amazing ! August 24, 2009 Stephen Thompson (Leeds England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
When i first bought this i wasnt sure because of the tutorial but once you get out of it it was AMAZING! Graphics are immense, Gameplay immense and gave me over 200 hours of gameplay. I still play on it now and its been out over 3 years ! So many side quests and a large main quest. I got all the G and got 1250 G ! Still the best game on xbox 360. And really reccomend this to people !
