5 out of 5 stars TomTom ONE Classic UK & RoI Satellite Navigation System   September 6, 2010

Although purchased back in July 2010, this sat nav wasn't given a proper test/work out until late August. It behaved perfectly.
We had only one problem - giving the Killington Lake Premier Inn postcode as our destination the TomTom took us to a single track road well away from the inn. The TomTom did take us to the correct postcode, unfortunately Premier Inn shares its postcode with the back of beyond.
Battery life is short so the in car charger is an essential on a journey of more than a couple of hours. Pushing the off switch for only a couple of seconds seems to leave the device on stand by - and in this condition battery power will drain away. To really swich it off you need to hold down the off switch for at least ten seconds.
That said, I recommend this TomTom to those who want to get to an unfamiliar location - or out of a confusing big city. In some cities its mapping will get out of date quickly as councils have a habit of changing one way streets, etc, just to make life challenging. Do they sometimes paint double yellow lines as a result of someone doodling on a map with a yellow highlighter pen?

The device worked well for a few months then just stopped with the "red cross of death" screen. This problem was eventually resolved but was a nightmare.

Every time I try to make a backup, the process fails.

Sometime later, I bought a new map. I follwed the instructions to load it onto the device. The process failed, the device was totally corrupted. TomTom support were unable to fix it and ultimately told me that it was my fault for not making a backup. I wanted to restore my original map and the told me I'd have to pay for a new copy or pay to have the device sent for repair.

Bunch of money grabbers. My TomTom has been binned. I use my iPhone now and it works a treat.

5 out of 5 stars This is a review of TomTom Customer Services!   September 5, 2010

I already have a TomTom satellite navigation system and use it regularly. I rate this as a 5 Star product. I shall soon be travelling extensively throughout Europe by road and recently saw an opportunity to purchase a spare unit quite cheaply at a sale. Although an older model, the unit was still boxed, absolutely complete and appeared to be unused. It would not, however, switch on but, thinking it needed nothing more than charging, I took a chance and bought it.

I tried everything (As did my local store) but the unit simply would not switch on. Eventually, I contacted TomTom Customer Services and told them how the I had obtained the unit and that it was "NOT" under guarantee. Their service was exceptional. Firstly, they sent me a small package containing a cardboard box which, when assembled, fitted my TomTom unit perfectly and would clearly protect the unit whilst in the post. Secondly, the package also contained a Royal Mail "Special Delivery" envelope complete with address and tracking number. Postage and insurance were already paid by TomTom.

Within 24 hours of my posting the unit back to TomTom I received an email confirming receipt and within 7 days I got another unit back. TomTom had REPLACED my unit free of charge with a brand new and exactly the same model and ALL under guarantee!

So for those of you who are contemplating purchasing a TomTom satellite navigation system, I thought you might like to know about this company's follow-up customer services system. They are quite excellent and I hope this message is useful.

Satnav's get better with every new model and the TomTom satnav is a good unit to have. Please be aware that if you do an update on your map, and the update doesn't go as planned, you are in for a lot of heartache. I found myself in this situation and TomTom are less than helpful. The update totally destroyed my unit, just as I was going on holiday. When I got back I contacted TomTom and, because I had downloaded the map they would not reimburse me for the map cost. They did offer to repair the unit, but I would be charged for it. There are several warnings on the web site that an update may cause the unit to stop working.

This product is a bargain and does exactly what is says on the tin. It is compact and light and my wife loves it because it fits perfectly into her hand bag.
