User manual is useless! August 6, 2010 Nick the Wonderful This is a very good looking laser printer but I only wish that Samsung had produced a proper manual to go with it!
The instructions for setting up a wireless connection to your PC/laptop are about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
Here are the very simple instructions for setting up the WiFi connection which I had to figure out by myself:-
1) Connect the printer to your PC/laptop using the ethernet cable provided. Do not connect via USB.
2) Insert the installation CD and if the setup program starts up by itself, come out of that and browse the CD files for an executable file called SetIP. Run that file and then MANUALLY set an IP for the printer. Ie. you will need to know the IP of your wireless router before you do this so that you can set the prinetr IP different to that of the wireless router. Eg. if your wireless router IP is 196.168.2.2, set the printer IP to 196.168.2.3. When you click APPLY, the SetIP program will ask you if you really want to update the printer's IP - click YES and it will show a confirmation window sayign that the printer's IP has been updated.
3) Now unplug the ethernet cable from the PC/laptop and plug it in to the wireless router with the other end of the cable still plugged in to the printer.
4) Run the SETUP.exe program from the CD and select the "Network Printer" installation. The program will search for the printer, if it is not found, click the manual installation and input the printer's IP that you have just set, eg. 196.168.2.3, the printer will then be found by the program and installation will commence - this bit takes a while so don't worry if it looks like it isn't installing, it will, eventually.
5) Once setup is complete, you may unplug the ethernet cable from the router.
6) Now your printer is ready to use wirelessly and you can go to your web browser and input the printer's IP in the address bar, eg. http://196.168.2.3, press enter and you will be taken to the printer's inbuilt software page where you can set wireless options, security etc.
The printer overall is very good, quite fast and quiet and looks the part.
If you follow the above 6 steps you will not have any problems. If you follow the Samsung user manual, you will have a multitude of problems and you will end up tearing your hair out.
Good luck!
Great Little Printer August 3, 2010 weebisom Delighted with this product. It's quiet, fast, reliable and looks downright sexy.
Oh and it makes cookie little noises. It could do with a bigger paper tray and the scanner is poor, but i bought it mainly for b/w printing and it's just fine.
oh dear July 12, 2010 Looks very good, sadly impossible to connect wirelessly to my standard BT wireless system.
The connection options do not include the connection system I have.
What can I do about that?
I've plugged it into the router, works OK that way.
Vastly disappointed at the enormous difiiculty experienced trying to get the dam thing to work wirelessly.
Considered throwing it out of the window, but it might hit the cat.
Samsung SCX-4500W ..perfect all-in-one for your home July 8, 2010 R Ibrahim I needed a home printer/scanner/copier for moderate use. I opted for laser for economy and speed. This samsung according to previous reviews and to my experience delivers both. The Wi-Fi is awesome and easy to setup if you read the provided manual (not intense reading). My samsung is in the kitchen next to the toaster and dimensions on this thing is a revolution as far as laser printers go. The one to go for to if you are changing houses or jobs more or less frequently as it is relatively light too. It is not a colour printer though so if need to print pictures from your camera get a didicated small canon one. Researched it and works cheaper.
Only holds a couple of hundred papers in its tray but ok for a moderate user. If you are using a dongle to connect to the internet, this may interfere with the wi-fi connection to the samsung so you have to disconnect the dongle, enable the wireless zero configuration on your laptop ( basically this enables back your laptop's wifi)
Service from amazon great as usual and top product.
Looks pretty and functions well.. July 5, 2010 Austin.A I purchased this product because I gave up with the price of ink for my epson. This printer looks better than everything else, has a good print speed, always reliable and it sits on my desk rather than under it. Cartridge replacement seems reasonably priced (it does come with one obviously). I must have printed a good 1000 pages so far, some pictures but mainly reports on thick paper. It suggests I have another 50% toner left, probably wont have to change toner for another year or so.
What are the drawbacks?.... well, paper tray is small and doesnt hold much, and the paper holder seems to be a complete afterthought. Very hard to clean thanks to its 'pimping' samsung tacky black gloss plastic (same as their tasteless range of televisions), however it actually looks nice on the printer, and it comes with its own cleaning cloth so I wont complain...much.
8/10. It has wireless also, havent tried it but instructions look simple enough. If it were a full colour printer I would give it 10/10, but its not.
Good service from amazon as always.
